The transformation of the national plantation sector cannot rely solely on companies and the government. The involvement of the younger generation through innovation, technology, and strengthening human resources is an important factor in maintaining the competitiveness of Indonesia’s plantation industry amidst challenges in food, energy, and climate change.

President Director of the Nusantara Plantation Holding (PT Perkebunan Nusantara III), Denaldy Mulino Mauna, stated that the plantation sector plays a strategic role in the national economy and thus requires cross-sector collaboration to address various evolving challenges.

"We must work together to build Indonesia’s plantation sector. The future of this sector is determined not only by companies or the government, but by all parties committed to advancing the nation," Denaldy said during a Studium Generale themed "Building the Future of Indonesia’s Plantation Sector: Innovation, Young Talent, and Sustainability" at IPB University, Bogor, Tuesday (9/6/2026).

Denaldy explained that the transformation of the plantation industry is increasingly linked to the use of technology, digitalisation, productivity enhancement, and demands for sustainability. Therefore, the involvement of the younger generation is considered a necessity to accelerate the plantation sector’s adaptation to global changes.

"The younger generation has an important role in driving digital transformation, increasing productivity, and strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesian plantations at the global level," he said.

The event was attended by hundreds of students and alumni of IPB University. Also present were the President of the Student Executive Board of the IPB University Student Family, M. Abdan Rofi; the Founder of Rembuk Pemuda, Aidil Afdan Pananrang; and the Vice Rector I for Education and Student Affairs at IPB University, Deni Noviana, who officially opened the event.

Deni stated that a forum bringing together the academic and industrial worlds is important for broadening students’ insights into the challenges of national development as well as the ever-changing needs of the professional world.

"Collaborations like this provide students with the opportunity to understand development challenges directly from industry players. This is a form of synergy that needs to be continuously strengthened to produce a generation that is not only academically excellent but also capable of answering the challenges and needs of national development going forward," Deni said.

The President of BEM KM IPB, M. Abdan Rofi, assessed that the various challenges facing the plantation sector can become a space for the younger generation to present new solutions through innovation and technological development.

"Every challenge always presents opportunities. Today’s transformation of the plantation sector can become a space for the younger generation to create innovations, build new technologies, and deliver solutions that have a real impact on national development," he said.

Meanwhile, Aidil Afdan Pananrang emphasised that national development requires the contribution of all elements of society, including the younger generation, who will be the main actors of future development.

"The work to optimise opportunities for the nation’s progress is not the work of one or two parties alone. It is the collective work of more than 200 million people who share the same responsibility to ensure Indonesia continues to move forward," Aidil said.

The discussion was interactive, covering various topics such as career opportunities in the plantation sector, the utilisation of agricultural and plantation technology, and strategies for building a more sustainable industry. Through this activity, PTPN affirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with academia to support the development of young talent and the transformation of the national plantation sector.
