PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) has implemented a restorative justice mechanism in the case of Elderly Mujiran in Lampung. Under this mechanism, legal proceedings have been halted, and Elderly Mujiran is now free from legal charges related to taking residual rubber sap from PTPN’s plantation. The restorative justice approach was taken by PTPN in response to directives from the Head of the BUMN Management Agency (BP BUMN) and Danantara Asset Management’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dony Oskaria.

‘PTPN management has officially announced that the legal case against Elderly Mujiran in Lampung has been fully halted,’ the company stated in a release received in Jakarta on Sunday (24 May).

Through restorative justice, a familial resolution has been achieved, freeing Elderly Mujiran from legal constraints. Management stated this move was part of a corporate governance reorientation to become more adaptive and humane.

PTPN also reaffirmed its full commitment to implementing Dony Oskaria’s strategic policy direction, emphasising that state-owned enterprises (BUMN) exist for, by, and of the people.

PTPN I management seized the moment of Mujiran’s release to issue a sincere apology and take moral responsibility for the public controversy that arose.

‘On behalf of all PTPN management, we extend our deepest apologies to Elderly Mujiran, his family, and the wider public,’ the statement said.

Through restorative justice, the company expressed relief that Elderly Mujiran is now free and reunited with his family.

Although the familial resolution initiative was started from the outset by parent company PTPN I, management acknowledged the rapid pace of information dynamics.

‘We have learned that field officers must respond with far greater sensitivity, responsiveness, and an unwavering commitment to human values,’ said PTPN management.

PTPN I stated that restorative justice has always been an option for resolving cases with surrounding communities.

In the statement, PTPN I viewed the directives from the BP BUMN Head and Danantara Asset Management not merely as administrative instructions, but as a crucial moment to recalibrate the company’s asset security operational standards.

As the state’s extension, asset protection must not be separated from social responsibility and empathy towards local communities.

As a tangible demonstration of its commitment and in line with BP BUMN’s follow-up instructions, PTPN is now implementing a sustained assistance programme for Elderly Mujiran.

In addition to providing basic necessities, management is also processing job opportunities tailored to his physical capacity or that of his family members.

This step aims to ensure PTPN’s presence in the community is not merely as a business entity, but as a state instrument delivering inclusive and sustainable economic solutions,’ according to PTPN’s statement.

Mujiran, a 72-year-old Lampung resident, took PTPN’s rubber sap to sell for his family’s livelihood and was subsequently tried at Kalianda District Court on charges of embezzling the rubber sap.
