PTPN Follows BP BUMN Chief’s Directive as Grandfather Mujiran Freed

PTPN reaffirms its commitment to implementing the strategic policy direction from the Head of the State-Owned Enterprise Management Agency (BP BUMN) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Danantara Asset Management, Dony Oskaria. PTPN has issued an apology and accepted moral responsibility for the public controversy that occurred.

“Through restorative justice mechanisms, we are grateful that Grandfather Mujiran is now free and reunited with his family. On behalf of PTPN’s entire management, we extend our deepest apologies to Grandfather Mujiran, his family, and the wider public,” stated PTPN Management in an official release on Sunday (24/5/2026).

“Although the family-style resolution was initiated from the start by the parent company, PTPN I, we acknowledge the rapid pace of information dynamics. We have learned that field officers must respond with greater sensitivity, responsiveness, and absolute prioritisation of human values,” the statement continued.

PTPN I stated that restorative justice has always been an option for resolving disputes with surrounding communities, including in the case of Grandfather Mujiran. The restorative justice process proceeded alongside the rapid spread of initial news reports.

PTPN I views the directives from the BP BUMN Head and Danantara Asset Management not merely as administrative instructions, but as a critical moment to recalibrate the company’s asset security operational standards. As the state’s extension, asset protection must not be separated from social responsibility and empathy towards local communities.

As a tangible demonstration of its commitment and in line with BP BUMN’s follow-up instructions, PTPN is currently implementing a continuous assistance programme for Grandfather Mujiran. Alongside the provision of basic needs support, management is also processing adaptable employment opportunities for him or his family members based on his physical capabilities.

PTPN stated that this step ensures the company’s presence in the community is not merely as a business entity, but as a state instrument providing inclusive and sustainable economic solutions.

Previously, Dony Oskaria strongly condemned PTPN’s legal action against Grandfather Mujiran after he collected residual rubber sap. Dony urged PTPN to immediately halt the legal proceedings against him.

“I strongly condemn the reporting and criminalisation of ordinary citizens, especially an elderly person like Grandfather Mujiran. SOEs belong to the people, built with public funds, and mandated to maximise benefits for the public. There must be no room for SOEs to act arrogantly and treat citizens in this manner,” Dony Oskaria said in a written statement on Sunday (24/5).
