PTFI Promotes Environmental Awareness Through Community Clean-Up in Gresik
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is encouraging public awareness of cleanliness and environmental sustainability through a community service activity with residents of Dusun Banyutami, Banyuwangi Village, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java. The activity involved around 230 participants, including PTFI employees, local residents, and village officials.
“Through the spirit of gotong royong, we want to present real action that provides direct benefits to the community while strengthening environmental awareness,” said PTFI Smelter VP External Affairs Erika Silva in Gresik on Sunday. Erika stated that the activity is part of the company’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with the community in creating a cleaner, more organised, greener, and more comfortable environment.
This effort aligns with the spirit of “One Freeport for Indonesia” and the SINCERE values that form the foundation of PTFI’s commitment to strengthening environmental awareness and contributing to communities around the company’s operational areas. She explained that the activity not only focused on environmental cleaning but also encouraged the implementation of more sustainable environmental management practices within the community.
During the activity, participants cleaned the environment and riverbanks, painted and repaired public facilities, installed cleanliness educational boards, and arranged the environment with various independence-themed attributes. The activity was also coupled with the installation of pennants, the Red and White flag, and environmental signage in preparation for the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.
PTFI, together with the village government and the community, also carried out greening efforts using compost produced from organic waste processing at a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (TPS 3R) facility fostered by PTFI. Additionally, the plant pots used were made from recycled materials as part of efforts to encourage material reuse and strengthen environmentally friendly management practices.
Erika said that community involvement in this activity is expected to not stop at the gotong royong action but to cultivate a sustainable habit of maintaining environmental cleanliness. “The most important thing is how this environmental awareness becomes a shared habit, so that a clean and comfortable environment can be continuously maintained by the community,” she said.
Banyuwangi Village Secretary Muhammad Sobirin said the gotong royong activity to clean and improve the environment was centred at the entrance to Dusun Banyutami because it is the face of the local community. Moreover, there is a river at the village entrance whose banks can be utilised for greening, especially with fruit trees, so that the results can be enjoyed by the community. “This is the gateway, the face of Dusun Banyutami, so we also focused on the river,” said Sobirin.
