PT Telkom targets 1.2m Internet users

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

State-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom relaunched on Wednesday its PlasaCom portal service and expects to reach 1.2 million users this year.

Head of Telkom multimedia division Adeng Achmad said that the service would benefit Internet users since it provided more specific facilities and easy access.

"Telkom has its own telecommunications infrastructure and network across the country so it is easy to deal with the Internet traffic," Adeng said.

The company launched PlasaCom in 1997 with limited users in education and general communication services.

It said that PlasaCom gained 960,000 e-mail users and delivered 30.3 million messages in March this year.

The PlasaCom portal service is a business unit of the Telkom multimedia division which supports Telkom's Internet access service called TelkomNet Instan by providing content services. The company said it reaped 2 million hours of Internet access every month.

Telkom targets the corporate sector, professionals and young people as users of its portal service. It said that PlasaCom services include general communications services such as e-mail, chatting, webforum, and also specific services such as online advertising, financial information and transactions on the Jakarta Stock Exchange, e-commerce, and tourism information.

"The public should be encouraged to use the Internet. We will only charge the users for the specific services they use," Adeng said.
