PT Rohto Responds to BPOM's Recall of Selsun Products, Here's the Explanation

PT Rohto Laboratories Indonesia has finally spoken out regarding the withdrawal of two Selsun-brand anti-dandruff shampoo products by the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM). Previously, BPOM announced the recall of several cosmetic and personal care products known to contain hazardous ingredients or contaminants exceeding safe limits. Two of these were Selsun 7 Flowers and Selsun 7 Herbal. Through a post on the Selsun Indonesia Instagram account, PT Rohto Laboratories Indonesia expressed an apology to the public while explaining several matters. “We understand that consumer trust is a top priority, and we realise that there are still aspects we need to improve in meeting applicable regulations,” the statement read, quoted on Saturday (9/5/2026). The company also explained that the product recall was carried out after the presence of 1,4-dioxane contamination was found in Selsun 7 Flowers and Selsun 7 Herbal. Nevertheless, PT Rohto stated there were differences in test results between the company’s independent laboratory and BPOM’s tests. “All Selsun products have been tested by an accredited independent laboratory and declared to meet the requirements,” the statement read. However, the company still proceeded with withdrawing the products from the market as a form of compliance with applicable regulations. PT Rohto stated that the product recall process has reached more than 96 percent. Consumers who still possess Selsun 7 Flowers and Selsun 7 Herbal products are also requested to temporarily stop using them. As a follow-up, the company is providing a product exchange service and refunds for affected consumers through its official customer care service. In addition, PT Rohto said it is preparing new formulations for the two products to comply with BPOM regulations before they are re-marketed. “Products with this new formulation are targeted to be available again in the second half of 2026,” the company wrote. In its post, the company displayed laboratory test results for several products such as Selsun Blue, Selsun Gold, Selsun Yellow Double Impact, and Selsun Scalp Care.
