PT PAL Indonesia is promoting the mastery of underwater technology as part of an effort to increase the independence of the national defence industry amidst geopolitical dynamics that impact the security of Indonesia’s maritime space.

The President Director of PT PAL Indonesia, Kaharuddin Djenod, stated that Indonesia requires the capability to control maritime space, both on the surface and underwater, meaning that the mastery of defence technology must be developed independently and sustainably.

“PT PAL has been discussing how ship platforms—including surface ships, warships, submarines, autonomous submarines, and so on—are equipped with various systems. We must have control over both technological potential and construction capabilities,” Kahramuddin said in Surabaya on Wednesday.

According to him, mastering ship platforms alone is insufficient to ensure defence independence if the systems and technologies used remain dependent on external parties.

Therefore, PT PAL continues to develop production capabilities, as well as maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) for submarines, underwater technology, human resources, and autonomous systems.

Kaharuddin assessed that these capabilities are essential to support the Indonesian Navy in maintaining the security of Indonesia’s maritime territory, while simultaneously strengthening the capacity of the national defence industry.

Furthermore, he noted that Indonesia requires control over both surface and underwater maritime areas, making the mastery of underwater technology vital.

He ensured that the domestic maritime industry possesses the necessary technology and capability to achieve this underwater mastery.
