Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - PT PAL Indonesia is reinforcing its strategic steps as the National Consolidator by consolidating the strengths of national shipyards through the Multi-Purpose Pinisi Ship construction project for the South Sulawesi Provincial Government.

“This project serves as the starting point for forming an integrated maritime industry ecosystem, while also sparking the industrialisation of the shipyard sector in eastern Indonesia,” said PT PAL President Director Kaharuddin Djenod in Surabaya on Monday.

In this project, PT PAL is partnering with PT Industri Kapal Indonesia (Persero) or PT IKI as the main partner, with PT PAL serving as the lead integrator controlling the design, quality standards, and production governance, while PT IKI handles the physical construction of the ship.

Kaharuddin stated that this scheme marks a strategic shift from a partial project approach to a structured industry orchestration.

He emphasised that the consolidation being carried out is not to dominate the industry but to strengthen all elements within it.

Moreover, this project is assessed to create significant multiplier effects, from increasing local shipyard capacities and absorbing labour to the growth of supporting industries such as material manufacturing, machinery systems, and the national supply chain.

The Multi-Purpose Pinisi Ship being built has a length of 52 metres and is designed for multiple functions, ranging from territorial surveillance and logistics distribution to public services.

The ship is also equipped with subsidised fuel distribution capacity for remote areas, as well as accommodation facilities for up to 87 people.

Strategically, the ship will be optimised by the South Sulawesi Provincial Government as an integrated service platform, including supporting health equity programmes through periodic delivery of medical personnel to remote islands.

Not only that, this project opens up new economic opportunities in line with the high demand for Pinisi ships both in the domestic and international markets.

This potential for follow-on orders is projected to become a catalyst for the growth of the national shipyard industry, particularly in eastern Indonesia, while strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global maritime supply chain.

“We are building the foundation of the industry, not just completing a project. If this consolidation runs consistently, Indonesia will rise from being a market to a major player in the global maritime industry,” said Kaharuddin.
