PT KCN Strengthens Role as Supporting Port Amid Rising Logistics Activity

Jakarta - Queues of logistics vehicles that had been hindering container unloading services in the Marunda area of North Jakarta have begun to ease after various stakeholders agreed on measures to accelerate operations. One of the steps taken was utilising the operational area of PT Karya Citra Nusantara (KCN) as a temporary container unloading location to help maintain the smooth flow of logistics. The congestion occurred as increased logistics activity at Tanjung Priok Port drove up demand for container services. Consequently, the empty container service capacity at the PT Global Terminal Marunda (GTM) depot reached its optimal limit, triggering vehicle queues on the access road to the Marunda area. Following aspirations raised by trailer drivers who are members of the Keluarga Besar Sopir Indonesia (KBSI), a mediation was held involving PT GTM, PT Quad Kontena, PT KCN, the Tanjung Priok Port Police, the local government, the Transportation Agency, and driver representatives. The mediation resulted in an agreement to utilise PT KCN’s operational area as an additional location for temporary container unloading. This step helped accelerate services, allowing the vehicle queues to gradually disperse and logistics activities to run more smoothly again. The experience also demonstrated that when service capacity at one point is under pressure, collaboration between logistics nodes is a crucial factor in maintaining the smooth distribution of goods. Tanjung Priok Port Police Chief AKBP Aris Wibowo stated that a dialogue-based approach was taken to ensure that the expression of aspirations remained conducive while producing a solution that could be implemented immediately. ‘This approach is taken so that all parties can find a joint solution, allowing logistics services to resume running well,’ said Aris. KBSI Coordinator Isnen expressed appreciation to all parties who opened a space for dialogue to find a resolution to the container unloading service congestion. ‘We appreciate all parties who were willing to sit down together to find a solution. We hope the results of this agreement can be implemented well so that the queues can be immediately cleared and container unloading services are better organised in the future. The most important thing for us is that operations return to normal so that drivers can work normally again,’ said Isnen. PT Global Terminal Marunda (GTM) Support and Development Manager Yan Rizal Supardi stated that the recent service congestion served as a lesson that the logistics system cannot rely on just one service node. Prior to utilising PT KCN’s operational area, GTM had also cooperated with several depots in the surrounding area to reduce the service burden. However, the available capacity at that time was unable to accommodate the surge in vehicles, necessitating capacity support from the surrounding area. ‘This condition shows that the smooth running of the logistics system cannot rely on just one service node. When service volume increases, collaboration between logistics players is needed so that available capacities can complement each other. The support of PT KCN’s operational area became one of the solutions that helped accelerate services so that vehicle queues could be immediately cleared,’ said Yan. He added that the existence of a supporting port area around Tanjung Priok Port is an important part of strengthening logistics service capacity. With synergy among logistics players, the distribution of goods can continue to run smoothly despite an increase in service volume. In line with this, PT KCN Public Relations representative Bella Mardiana stated that the handling of the congestion in Marunda demonstrates the importance of having supporting ports with adequate operational capacity to support the smooth running of the national logistics system. ‘The existence of a supporting port is not only important in helping to clear service congestion when logistics activity increases, but is also part of strengthening the national logistics system to be more efficient, resilient, and competitive,’ explained Bella. As a Port Business Entity (BUP), she explained that PT KCN was developed from the outset to support the logistics ecosystem in the Marunda area as a supporting port for Tanjung Priok Port. Going forward, PT KCN is committed to continuously strengthening its port service capacity through facility development and service improvement to support the growing needs of national logistics.
