PT Kaltim Methanol Industri Receives PROPER Gold Award 2025
PT Kaltim Methanol Industri (PT KMI) has once again achieved a significant national milestone by receiving the PROPER Gold award for 2025 from the Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). This award represents the highest recognition for the company’s performance in environmental management and social responsibility, positioning PT KMI as one of Indonesia’s leading companies in sustainability standards.
The achievement of the PROPER Gold 2025 reflects PT KMI’s long journey in building environmental management systems and practices for the chemical industry through innovative, participatory, and collaborative approaches involving all stakeholders. PT KMI continues to demonstrate a consistent upward trend in environmental management performance.
This consistency underscores that sustainability is an integral part of the company’s business strategy and work culture. As a tangible manifestation of environmental management, PT KMI implements Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) as one of its flagship programmes.
The application of CCU to produce methanol is the first of its kind in Indonesia’s chemical industry. Through this approach, carbon emissions generated from industrial processes are not only controlled but also repurposed as value-added raw materials in methanol production.
The implementation of CCU introduces a new paradigm in environmental management, where carbon emissions are no longer viewed as waste but as a strategic resource that can be optimally utilised. This implementation makes a significant contribution to reducing the company’s carbon emission intensity and supports the national agenda of transitioning to Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in Indonesia as part of solutions to global climate change issues.

One flagship programme that directly impacts coastal communities is ‘Kotak Kehidupan’. This programme provides innovative solutions for local fishermen through the provision of storage aids for their catches at sea.
By utilising liquid nitrogen from industrial processes that is reprocessed, PT KMI develops a system for making ice without electricity. Through ‘Kotak Kehidupan’, fishermen can keep the quality of their catches fresh for longer, increase their income, reduce emissions, and actively participate in preserving coastal ecosystems.
