PT KAI (Persero) President Director Bobby Rasyidin has stated that the company will close illegal railway crossings that do not meet safety standards. This step is being taken in the wake of the inter-train collision incident at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday evening.

“There is no compromise. We have seen that even a slight disruption to safety aspects can result in so many casualties,” Bobby said on Thursday, 30 April 2026.

Bobby explained that KAI and the Directorate General of Railways under the Ministry of Transportation will inspect railway crossings. Closures will target those that do not comply with safety standards. He also urged the public not to reopen crossings that have been closed by KAI.

Bobby further requested that the public refrain from violating operational official KAI crossings. He clarified that official crossings built by KAI are equipped with sensors, not merely portals.

In the same instance, Bobby stated that KAI will fulfil and enhance safety aspects for 1,800 official or illegal railway crossings. These safety improvement efforts include constructing flyover roads or installing gated systems.

Meanwhile, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said he has identified priority locations among thousands of railway crossing points for improvements. “Those that are highly dangerous will be prioritised first this year,” he remarked.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto approved the Bekasi regional government’s proposal to build a flyover at a railway crossing in the area following the train accident between the KRL Commuter Line and the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek.

Besides Bekasi, Prabowo highlighted the issue of at-grade crossings on Java island. According to him, there are 1,800 railway and road crossings that are unguarded, contributing to ongoing train accidents.

Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that Prabowo will provide hundreds of billions in assistance for building a flyover in Bekasi following the train accident at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday evening, 27 April 2026.

According to Dasco, the Bekasi regional government had planned to construct the Bulak Kapal flyover to address the congestion at railway crossings but was hindered by budget constraints. “I have conveyed this to the President and requested presidential assistance so that the flyover can be realised. And, alhamdulillah, the President has approved presidential aid of Rp 200 billion,” said this daily chairman of the Gerindra Party when contacted on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

Dasco explained that the flyover is targeted to be completed in four to five months. Based on information received by Dasco from Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono, the presence of the elevated road at the railway crossing is predicted to prevent accidents by up to 90 per cent.
