PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 6 Yogyakarta has condemned the continued instances of motorists breaking through railway crossing gates following the tragic train accident in East Bekasi that killed more than a dozen people earlier this week.

On Wednesday, 29 April 2026, social media in Yogyakarta was abuzz with a reckless act by a car driver who became trapped between the closed railway crossing gates in the Timoho area of Yogyakarta City, specifically at crossing JPL 349 between Lempuyangan and Maguwo stations.

In the viral video, security personnel assisted by several residents were forced to manually open the crossing gates to allow the car to exit before the train passed.

“We deeply regret this incident as it endangers train operations and the safety of other road users,” said PT KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta Public Relations Manager Feni Novida Saragih on Thursday, 30 April 2026.

KAI Daop 6 confirmed that there were no disruptions to train services or casualties in this incident. However, she stressed that the driver’s actions severely endangered safety and violated the law.

“This reckless act by the driver could constitute a traffic violation and may be subject to police action,” said Feni.

She reminded all road users to always comply with and discipline themselves to obey traffic signs, especially at level crossings. “Every road user must stop when the crossing gates begin to close and must not force their way through. This is regulated by law,” she said.

Article 124 of Law No. 23 of 2007 on Railways states that at level crossings between railway tracks and roads, road users must prioritise train movements.

Furthermore, Feni noted that Article 114 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation outlines the obligations of vehicle drivers at level crossings between railway tracks and roads.

The law also states: “Stop when the signal sounds, the railway crossing gates begin to close, and/or there are other warnings. Prioritise the train. Give priority to vehicles that have already crossed the tracks.”

Thus, Feni explained, forcing through crossing gates is a legal violation and may incur sanctions under Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation.

Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation (LLAJ Law) clearly regulates sanctions for violations at level crossings. Article 296 addresses penalties for drivers violating rules at railway crossings.

Forcing through crossing gates or ignoring warning signals can result in a criminal penalty of up to three months’ imprisonment or a maximum fine of Rp750,000. “We urge the public to take the lead and help maintain safety at level crossings,” she said.

Feni also reminded that safety is a collective responsibility. “Stop for a moment, observe the signs, look left and right, and ensure no train is approaching before crossing.”

As of Thursday, KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta stated that train departures from Daop 6 Yogyakarta to various cities were on schedule following the evacuation and normalisation of the rail track in East Bekasi, West Java.

This follows the completion of the evacuation and normalisation process of the rail track in East Bekasi, West Java, allowing operations to resume normally, including trains departing from Daop 6 Yogyakarta.
