PT Indonesia Open Network (ION) has officially been established as a company dedicated to developing digital public infrastructure to expand market access and strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The establishment of PT ION was marked by the signing of the deed of incorporation by the CEO of PT Chairos International Ventures, Sachin Gopalan, the Chairman of the ION Teknologi Indonesia Foundation, Ronald Walla, and the Secretary of the ION Teknologi Indonesia Foundation, Rudolf Saut Butarbutar, at the Apindo Office, Permata Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Friday (4/9/2026).

Following its official legal incorporation, PT ION is targeting an initial investment phase of approximately US$100 million. This funding is intended to be sourced from at least 20 companies, with an estimated contribution of around US$5 million per investor.

“Today marks the signing of the establishment of PT Indonesia Open Network. With the formation of PT ION, we now have a legal entity capable of conducting various business activities while providing accountability to the shareholders investing to build Indonesia,” stated Bayu in a press release, quoted on Saturday (5/9/2026).

PT ION has an authorised share capital of IDR 10 billion, with a placed and paid-up capital of IDR 2.5 billion. The company has issued 2,500,001 shares, consisting of 2.5 million Class A shares and one golden share held by the ION Teknologi Indonesia Foundation.

Bayu explained that ION’s ownership structure is designed to ensure that no single investor dominates the company.

“We invite various parties to work together to build ION for the benefit of MSMEs and the progress of the Indonesian economy. This is not a startup built solely to seek maximum profit, but rather a digital public infrastructure developed for the common good,” said Bayu.

Sachin Gopalan, CEO of PT Chairos International Ventures, stated that ION will serve as an open digital trade network that can be utilised by the public while helping Indonesian companies enhance their digital capabilities.

“ION will be a public infrastructure that the community can use to conduct digital trade, while also providing various tools so that Indonesian companies are able to increase their digital capabilities,” said Sachin.

ION’s ownership will eventually involve various sectors, ranging from the government or State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), banking, and manufacturing to technology companies. This concept is expected to keep ION open and independent.

The development of ION also received a US$1.5 million grant from Google through an incubation programme. The model being developed shares similarities with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) in India.

Sachin added that the ION Teknologi Indonesia Foundation will act as a ‘mission guardian’ to ensure the company continues to fulfil its mandate as digital public infrastructure.

“In a company with many shareholders, each party may bring their own interests. Therefore, there must be a neutral party to ensure that PT ION remains within its established mandate. That is the role of the ION Teknologi Indonesia Foundation,” explained Sachin.
