PT Indorayon aims to gain ISO 14000

JAKARTA (JP): PT Inti Indorayon Utama, which already has an ISO 9002 certificate for quality management, is making preparations to earn a ISO 14000 certificate for environmental management.

"After getting the ISO 9002, we aim to be qualified for excellent environmental management through the ISO 14000 certificate," P. Daritan, a director of the company, announced in a statement yesterday.

Recently, Indorayon, a major producer of pulp and paper in Porsea, North Sumatra, received the ISO 9002 certificate from SGS Yarsley International Certification Services which is based in Britain.

He pointed out that stipulations for the ISO 14000 will only be announced in the middle of this year. But Indorayon has from the outset strived to apply such conditions in its business operations.

Daritan was speaking during a meeting with a team of the House of Representatives commission on development planning, population, research and technology who visited Indorayon's industrial facilities and its waste treatment plant in Porsea yesterday.

The concept of the ISO 14000 series was first introduced in Indonesia through the national symposium on Environmental Management System and Environmental Audit held last month by PT Redecon, in collaboration with Environmental Impact Management Agency (Bapedal).

It requires an organization to establish internal rules or mechanisms to meet its policy and objectives on the management of their environmental impact associated with their activities, products or services.

The House commission hailed Indorayon for its serious efforts in improving its environmental management over the last two years.

The commission's vice chairman, Muhammad Muas, gave a positive assessment after he and his team inspected Indorayon's waste processing installations.

Muas noted that the waste processing facility worth Rp 25 billion (US$10.6 million), which employs the technology of Deep Tank Air Activated Sludge System, has proven that Indorayon is committed to coping with environmental issues. (13)
