PT Great River workers still on strike

BOGOR: Thousands of workers from textile producer PT Great River International in Cibinong, Bogor, continued their strike for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding a pay raise from Rp 412,000 to Rp 576,000 per month.

Tanto, 30, an employee of the publicly listed company, said that they also were demanding that the company pay them in full as the management had previously agreed to do beginning this month, rather than gradually increase the salaries, which is being proposed now.

"We ask that the company fulfill our demands, otherwise we'll continue our strike until it agrees to do so," said Tanto.

However, the company's Public Relations Manager, Titin Cahaya Dewi, claimed that the management and the workers had previously reached an agreement that PT Great River has proposed to gradually increase the pay in four stages this year.

Bogor's Manpower Agency chief, Suherdis, confirmed that there had been agreement between the management and the workers to pay the new salaries in stages.

"The company has stated that it cannot afford the raises in full this month. It has to make it in stages," he said.--JP
