Bogor (ANTARA) - The President Director of PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero), Yudisteral Yunis, stated the company’s readiness to play a role as the government’s green fiscal instrument.

“In terms of readiness, Geo Dipa is being prepared to serve as a green fiscal tool. We are ready to implement this,” he said during the 2026 Ministry of Finance Media Gathering in Bogor, West Java, on Friday.

Technically, he noted that the company is currently operating power plants with a capacity of 120 megawatts (MW), is constructing an additional 100 MW plant, and is preparing procurement for a 110 MW plant. Consequently, the total geothermal capacity under management is approaching 400 MW, supported by 24 years of operational and maintenance experience.

Over the next 10 years, the company aims to build geothermal power plant capacities of up to 965 MW and produce approximately 5,000 tonnes of silica and lithium per year, he added.

“These minerals are equivalent to those produced from traditional mining, but they emerge from geothermal wells. Interestingly, we can claim these as ‘green minerals’. In contrast, minerals from traditional mines are ‘grey minerals’ because the excavation equipment, such as excavators, relies on fossil fuels,” he explained.

The utilisation of these green minerals is expected to become a high-value commodity capable of supporting the economic viability of geothermal field development, thereby driving more competitive geothermal electricity prices in the future.

Indonesia is said to possess geothermal potential of 24 gigawatts (GW), equivalent to 40 per cent of the world’s total geothermal resources, yet utilisation has only reached 11 per cent, or approximately 2.7 GW.

As a result, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has identified 14 new exploration sites with an energy potential of 732 MW, which are estimated to require additional investment of 0.4 billion USD, bringing the total required investment to 5.75 billion USD.

If all Renewable Energy (EBT) potential is monetised as a green fiscal instrument to build the national economy, Indonesia can achieve energy self-sufficiency while accelerating Net Zero Emission (NZE) targets. The local (in-situ) nature of renewable energy means that production costs are unaffected by global commodity price fluctuations, such as coal or natural gas, allowing it to serve as a bulwark for national energy security.

“If this is implemented, it will be the ultimate way for renewable energy to drive national economic growth,” he said.

Yudistian noted that Geo Dipa’s readiness in other renewable energy sectors, such as hydro, can be accelerated through synergy with experienced State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) such as PLN and Brantas Abipraya.

He also highlighted Geo Dipa’s advantages, supported by an AAA credit rating, the third-highest Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) rating in Indonesia (ranking within the top 25 in Asia and top 50 globally in the electric utility sector), as well as the preparation of corporate infrastructure based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and digitalisation.

PT Geo Dipa Energi is a State-Owned Enterprise that serves as a Special Mission Vehicle (SMV) under the guidance and supervision of the Ministry of Finance, tasked with harnessing geothermal energy for electricity production.
