Waste management company PT Asta Manah Liang, operating in Klungkung, Bali, has been forced to dump waste alongside rice fields in Tojan Village, Banjarangkan Subdistrict. The claimed organic waste pile emits a foul odour detectable on the main road.

PT Asta Manah Liang operates a 3R Waste Processing Facility (TPS3R) in Gelgel Village, Klungkung Subdistrict. Director Putu Gede Indra stated the dumping site is his personal land.

“It is organic waste. For the past few days, our machine has broken down, so we have temporarily stored the processed organic waste there. It is my personal land,” Indra said on Monday, 1 June 2026.

He did not deny that plastic waste was also dumped at the site. The odour, he added, was expected as it came from organic waste.

Indra confirmed they would resume processing once the machine is repaired. “We will tidy up the waste once the machine is fixed, likely within two days,” he said.

The organic waste pile is located near Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass Road. The foul-smelling heap appeared neatly contained but not scattered, though plastic waste was visible in each pile despite claims of it being organic.

The site is accessible by two- and four-wheeled vehicles and has a gate, which was open during our visit.

Indra explained they attempt to restrict access to prevent locals from dumping unprocessed waste there. “If the gate is found open, we must secure it again as residents may be dumping their waste,” he said.

Tojan Village Head I Wayan Suastawa confirmed the waste was dumped by PT Asta Manah Liang on the company’s private land. However, he stated they had reported the incident to Klungkung’s Environmental and Land Affairs Office (DLHP).

“We are still coordinating with the DLHP regarding this matter,” Suastawa said.
