Psychologist's Tips for Building a Reading Culture in Children
Building a reading habit in children is not an instant process but rather a cultural development within the family. Child and family psychologist Sani B. Hermawan, P.Si, emphasises the importance of parents introducing books as part of a child’s daily life from an early age. According to this graduate of the University of Indonesia’s Psychology Faculty, the most effective first step is to create a literacy atmosphere at home, such as providing adequate and appealing physical facilities for children. ‘For example, having a child’s reading corner with attractive bookshelves that children can easily access and read from,’ said Sani, quoted on Tuesday (26 May). Sani explained that book selection must align with a child’s developmental stage. For preschoolers, physical books with strong visual elements and interactive features are strongly recommended over digital ones. Physical books provide better sensory stimulation for motor skills and focus development. Conversely, digital books are considered effective only once children reach adulthood due to their flexibility and accessibility. Here is Sani B. Hermawan’s guide for book selection and reading activities by age group: Reading with parents goes beyond information transfer; it is a means to build emotional bonds. Sani advises parents to set aside regular time, such as before bedtime, to read stories or discuss book content with their children. ‘The key is for children to feel comfortable and enjoy the interaction between parent and child during reading. It becomes a bonding activity,’ he added. ‘When children feel at ease, they associate books with family warmth rather than academic burden.’ Beyond effectively diverting children’s attention from electronic gadgets, reading culture has broad impacts on child development, including: By introducing books early and creating a supportive environment, parents not only impart knowledge but also pass on positive habits beneficial for the child’s future.
