Psychologist highlights unconscious 'oversharing' behaviour on social media
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Psychologist Ayu S. Sadewo S.Psi, Psychologist, stated that oversharing, or excessively sharing information, especially on social media, is often done unconsciously by individuals. According to her, individuals who engage in oversharing are driven by intense emotional states, which trigger impulsive behaviour, particularly when posting on social media. “When emotions are intense, people tend to be more impulsive and less likely to consider the impact of their posts, which may be excessive,” Ayu said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday. The psychologist, a graduate of the Psychology Profession programme at the University of Indonesia, said that oversharing is characterised by an individual sharing something excessively, such as on social media. In the context of oversharing on social media, this behaviour can be seen from several aspects, namely content that is uploaded being too personal or private and not intended for public consumption. In addition, sharing stories involving other people without their permission is also a form of oversharing that is often not realised. “Content that is very ‘emotional’ or done when the intensity of emotions is high, whether it’s being too happy, too sad, or too angry, or other excessive emotions,” she added. Furthermore, Ayu reminded the importance of self-awareness in preventing oversharing on social media. According to her, one way to prevent impulsive behaviour and avoid oversharing on social media is to apply the “pause” technique, or take a temporary break. By taking a break, the brain is given the opportunity to think rationally again. This condition allows individuals to be more controlled by the thinking process than by momentary emotions. “To avoid being impulsive, take a ‘pause’ first. Before posting, take a moment, perhaps by taking a few deep breaths, so that the thinking process can be reactivated,” she said.
