Psychiatrist dr. Lahargo Kembaren, Sp.KJ, has warned that consuming digital content such as films, series, and news reports can increase the risk of suicidal behaviour if presented in a sensational manner. According to him, inappropriate portrayals in public spaces or on gadget screens can become a dangerous trigger for vulnerable groups in society. “The more someone feels ‘that’s exactly me’ about a character or narrative, the higher the risk of psychological identification,” said Lahargo on Sunday (5/4). Lahargo detailed several elements in content that pose a high risk of triggering imitation or worsening mental conditions. This statement comes in the wake of concerns from the Indonesian Association of Psychiatry Specialists (PDSKJI) regarding the installation of billboards promoting the film titled Aku Harus Mati in public spaces. Although visual content or billboards are not the sole cause, Lahargo emphasised that they can serve as a spark for individuals who already have vulnerabilities, such as those suffering from depression, bipolar disorder, bullying victims, or those experiencing financial crises. “The media acts as a spark on existing ‘fuel’, namely a psychological situation that is not okay,” he explained. He suggested that promotions in public spaces and viral content should consider aspects of psychological safety. The messages displayed should not only chase virality but also protect the mental health of the wider public. “Not everything that goes viral is safe for the soul. There are titles that sell fear but can hurt those who are struggling to stay alive,” he concluded.
