PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN) has officially launched the operations of the Nusantara Five Satellite (SNL) or N5 as part of efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s digital independence and national satellite capacity amid global geopolitical dynamics. PSN’s President Director, Adi Rahman Adiwoso, stated that the presence of Nusantara Five serves as an important symbol for enhancing Indonesia’s national capacity in the space and telecommunications sectors. “Today, we proudly inaugurate the operations of Nusantara 5. An important symbol for our country to maintain national independence,” Adi said during the inauguration of SNL operations at the JS Luwansa Hotel in Jakarta on Monday (11/5/2026). Adi explained that the Nusantara Five Satellite covers services in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. According to him, the satellite not only strengthens Indonesia’s position in the ASEAN region but also demonstrates the importance of sovereign capacity or national capacity in the digital connectivity sector. “Nusantara 5 covers Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to enhance Indonesia’s strength and bring digital connectivity to ASEAN,” Adi stated. He noted that several countries in the region are now paying significant attention to national connectivity independence amid global geopolitical uncertainties. Adi said that N5 will be recognised as national capacity by the Philippines and is currently being discussed with Malaysia. On that occasion, Adi also highlighted Indonesia’s position as one of the major players in the satellite industry in the Asia-Pacific. He stated that Indonesia’s current satellite capacity is the largest in the region. “Together with other Indonesian satellites, we can report that Indonesia has a capacity of 400 Gbps, which is very large. We can continue to play a role on the global stage with the largest capacity in Asia,” Adi continued. According to Adi, the development of satellite technology is no longer just a business matter but an important part of a country’s defence and future. Therefore, Indonesia needs to build its own technological capabilities to avoid dependence on foreign parties. He added that the PSN Group has implemented three geostationary satellite programmes in the last 10 years with investments exceeding Rp 23 trillion. Adi emphasised the importance of building a sustainable national space ecosystem, including the development of young Indonesian talent in the technology and space sectors. “With the launch of Nusantara 5 in 2025, the PSN Group wants to show that Indonesia is capable of performing on the global stage and opening a new chapter in the development of the national space industry,” Adi said.
