PSMS beat PSIS in Bang Yos Cup

JAKARTA: A penalty gave defending champions PSMS Medan a 1-0 victory over PSIS Semarang on Tuesday in the Bang Yos Gold Cup soccer championships at Lebak Bulus Stadium, South Jakarta.

Aldicio Fleitas scored from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute after PSIS defender Patricio was booked for handball. Despite a spirited attempt, PSIS was unable to equalize.

PSIS, who is now coached by ex PSMS coach Sutan Harhara, missed their own golden opportunity when Fofe Komara's 21st minute penalty was blocked by goalkeeper Marcus RH, who was named man of the match.

"I'm satisfied with the players' performance in beating PSIS," team manager Randiman Tarigan was quoted as saying by Antara news service. "Our only protest is about the refereeing. We hope the organizers will choose more qualified referees."

Six teams, including Osotspa FC of Thailand and the U-23 Cambodian national squad, are competing in the Rp 830 million (US$80 million) event. The final will be held on Saturday. -- JP
