PSI Ready to Fight if Nasdem Pushes for 7 Percent Parliamentary Threshold

PANDEGLANG, KOMPAS.com - The Daily Chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Ahmad Ali, affirmed that PSI is designed to be prepared for any battle. They are ready to compete to secure seats in the DPR (House of Representatives), even if the parliamentary threshold increases to 7 percent, as proposed by the Nasdem Party. “For PSI, we have designed this party together with the General Chairman and the management to be adaptable to all kinds of battlefields,” said Ali in Pandeglang, Banten, Thursday (February 26, 2026) evening. “Whether it’s 0 percent, 3 percent, 5 percent, or 7 percent, we are preparing this party to be very adaptable to all kinds of regulations set by the government and the DPR,” he added. However, Ali reminded that since the Reformasi era, Indonesia has allowed for many parties in the DPR, not just 3 as in the New Order era. “What I regret is that this comes from a party like Nasdem, which was born from the womb of the Reformasi, which from the beginning spoke about togetherness, about how important it is for a large country like Indonesia to be built together. The more groups, the more people building, the better it will be,” explained Ali. Ali predicts that if the parliamentary threshold increases to 7 percent, then only 3-5 parties will pass into the DPR. “This will certainly be in contrast to the spirit of togetherness that the party always shouts about, especially Mr. Surya Paloh as my political mentor. So, if you ask my opinion, the spirit of the Reformasi should be used as a reference to create a rule,” he added. Previously, the General Chairman of the Nasdem Party, Surya Paloh, affirmed that his party remains consistent in proposing a parliamentary threshold of 7 percent. The proposal is said to be being finalized in discussions in Commission II of the DPR RI. “It is being discussed by colleagues in the DPR, the DPR faction, of course with Commission II. I will leave it to them to work together with the other faction leaders,” said Paloh at the Nasdem Party DPP Office, Central Jakarta, Saturday (February 21, 2026). “Nasdem honestly thinks that from a multi-party system, if we can change it to a selected party, it will be much more effective for implementing the benefits of the freedom of democracy that we have,” he said. He also believes that the current practice of democracy places too much emphasis on the number of political parties rather than quality. “We are too happy with the many political parties in the name of democracy itself. But on the other hand, what is the point of democracy if it does not bring benefits,” said Paloh. The discourse on changing the parliamentary threshold emerged ahead of the start of the discussion on the Revision of the Election Law in the DPR RI.
