Health service recovery is a key focus of post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. After disasters that began in late November 2025 damaged a number of health facilities, the government is working to speed up repairs so residents can once again receive medical care.

Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian, who also heads the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force (Satgas PRR), said most regional general hospitals and community health centres in the three provinces had resumed operations.

“Operations have been restored more quickly: regional general hospitals are almost 100 per cent operational, community health centres are at 100 per cent, and only six auxiliary health centres remain,” Tito told the media in Jakarta on Thursday, 15 October 2026.

The disasters affected dozens of hospitals, hundreds of community health centres and hundreds of auxiliary health centres. Restoring these facilities is therefore an important part of bringing basic services back to affected communities.

Recovery efforts are being coordinated by central and regional governments, with the Health Ministry also deploying health workers from Jakarta. The work has drawn on the ministry’s regular budget as well as support from non-governmental parties.

Tito also praised Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin for acting quickly to address the impact of the disasters, including before rehabilitation and reconstruction funding was available.

“Even before funds for rehabilitation and reconstruction had been released, he had already used his own regular budget, as well as support from non-governmental parties that he mobilised,” Tito said.

Restoring health facilities involves more than repairing buildings; it also means ensuring that people can access medical services again. The reopening of hospitals and community health centres allows care to resume, including patient treatment and routine medical services.

The government has set a three-year timeline for post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, covering 2026 to 2028. Central and regional governments are being urged to work in parallel so that facilities and public services can be restored in line with local needs.

As head of the PRR Task Force, Tito also held an online meeting with regional leaders in the three provinces. The meeting was intended to share progress on health-sector recovery and encourage faster rehabilitation and reconstruction in the affected areas.
