PRR Task Force Accelerates Economic Recovery for Survivors and Mitigates Follow-up Disasters

The Head of the Steering Committee for the Acceleration Task Force for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) after the Sumatra disaster, Pratikno, emphasised that economic recovery for survivors and mitigating the risk of further disasters are priorities during the post-disaster transition phase in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

This was conveyed by Pratikno after a meeting with the Head of the PRR Task Force for the Sumatra Disaster, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, at the Ministry of Home Affairs office, Jakarta, on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

Pratikno explained that economic recovery for survivors will be carried out in parallel with various priority action plans, such as river normalisation, restoration of rice fields and fish ponds, improvement of logistics routes, strengthening community economic activities, and labour-intensive programmes.

The scheme is designed to anticipate the follow-on effects of the disaster, such as further flooding due to rivers that have not been fully normalised.

In addition, this step also aims to maintain community economic activity through labour-intensive programmes that can absorb workers and increase the purchasing power of affected residents.

“We continue to ensure that the urgent needs of the community are met as best as possible. In addition, we must also facilitate the economic life of the community again, starting from maintaining logistics routes, agriculture, fisheries, to trade and MSMEs,” said Pratikno, who is also the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

On that occasion, Pratikno emphasised that accelerating the repair of physical infrastructure is also a major focus during the transition phase of recovery.

“We must ensure that physical infrastructure is strong enough to withstand future climate change,” he said.
