Provincial Government Prepares Trauma Healing for Child Victims of Shooting in Puncak
Nabire (ANTARA) - The Central Papua Provincial Government is preparing trauma healing services for the child who became a victim of the shooting in Puncak Regency as part of the handling following the humanitarian tragedy.
Acting Regional Secretary of Central Papua, Silwanus Sumule, in Nabire on Tuesday, said the services would be provided after the child victim, currently being treated at Nabire Hospital, recovers.
“After the child is discharged from the hospital, a special team from the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency will step in to provide trauma healing services,” he said.
“We hope this child can soon leave the ICU and continue with follow-up treatment,” he added.
In addition to the child victim, the provincial government is also focusing on handling a 27-year-old pregnant woman, approximately six to seven months along, who is at Jayapura City Hospital. The victim sustained injuries to her chin.
“This patient is a special concern because she is pregnant, so in addition to treating the wound, we are also preparing for her delivery process in Jayapura,” he said.
He stated that based on data collected by the local government, there were five victims in the incident.
The other three victims are receiving treatment at Mulia Hospital in Puncak Jaya Regency, as it is closer and has better healthcare facilities compared to Puncak Hospital.
He added that the Central Papua Provincial emergency response team would be dispatched to Puncak and Puncak Jaya Regencies on Thursday (23/4) to ensure optimal handling of the victims and distribution of aid.
The team will bring basic community needs, such as food supplies and medicines, while also conducting direct data collection from residents in the shooting location, namely Kembru Village, Sinak District, Puncak.
“The team will work during the emergency response period of about 14 days to address short-term, medium-term, and long-term needs,” he said.
According to him, short-term handling focuses on treating the five victims, while follow-up steps will be formulated based on field data.
Previously, the Central Papua Provincial Government formed a cross-agency task force involving the Regional Development Planning Agency, Regional Finance, Health Agency, Social Agency, Fire Agency, and Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency to address the impacts of the tragedy.
He stated that the local government is committed to ensuring all victims receive proper handling.
Previously, a shooting incident occurred in Puncak Regency on 14 April 2026, which resulted in several civilians becoming victims, ranging from injuries to deaths.
