Provincial Government: Operational Costs Rising, TransJ Fare Review is Reasonable
TransJakarta bus fares of Rp 3,500 are under review for a potential increase. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government considers the fare review by PT TransJakarta as reasonable.
“The review conducted by PT TransJakarta is reasonable. The Rp 3,500 fare has indeed remained unchanged since 2005 (21 years), while operational costs continue to rise due to inflation, energy prices, fleet maintenance (including electric buses), and service expansion,” said Chico Hakim, Special Staff to the Jakarta Governor for Social Communications, to reporters on Saturday (25/4/2026).
Nevertheless, the final decision lies with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and the DPRD through the APBD. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is considering several factors regarding the TransJ fare increase.
“The Provincial Government prioritises caution, considering public purchasing power and economic conditions. There has been no decision on a fare increase in 2026; the priority remains providing quality services with efficient subsidies,” he added.
Chico added that the current TransJakarta subsidy in the 2026 APBD is around Rp 3.7 trillion. Chico stated that cost recovery is only about 14%.
“Ticket revenue covers only 14% of operational costs. The rest is covered by the APBD from public taxes,” he continued.
He said the subsidy per passenger reaches Rp 9,000-Rp 10,000 per trip. It should be that the total cost per trip is around Rp 13,000.
“Jakarta’s UMP has increased nearly sevenfold since 2005 (from around Rp 800,000 to Rp 5.73 million in 2026), while the flat fare remains the same,” Chico explained.
Chico noted that passenger volume continues to rise. The record in 2025 saw TransJakarta passengers reaching 413 million.
“The fleet is more modern, and routes are expanding. TransJakarta is a public service obligation to alleviate congestion and pollution, not just a business. We continue to listen to public aspirations, and every decision will be communicated openly,” he stated.
TransJ Reviews Fare Increase
Previously, TransJakarta President Director Welfizon Yuza revealed that his company is reviewing a TransJakarta fare increase. He mentioned that TransJakarta fares have not increased for 21 years.
This was revealed by Welfizon during a meeting with Commission B of the Jakarta DPRD at the DPRD Building, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (23/4). According to him, the TransJakarta fare has been Rp 3,500 since 2005.
“Regarding the fare increase. Of course, this is in the domain of the executive or legislature, but we have conducted a review related to the fare increase, which is currently still at Rp 3,500 since 2005, so approximately 21 years,” said Welfizon.
