Crowd Holds Protest in Front of the Yogyakarta Regional Police Headquarters Tonight

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Yogyakarta Regional Police Headquarters (Mapolda DIY) in Sleman on Tuesday evening (24 February).

One of the participants, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the protest was triggered by public anger towards the police institution, particularly due to the increasing number of violent acts committed by members of the police force. One such incident was the brutal action by a member of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) against students at an MTS (Islamic Junior High School) in Tual, North Maluku, not long ago.

The crowd, whose origin is currently unknown, arrived at the Mapolda DIY after sunset, or after 6:00 PM.

Upon arrival, they immediately dismantled the water barriers and even breached the eastern gate of the police headquarters.

However, the crowd was unable to enter further as access was blocked by barbed wire. Several police officers were seen guarding the inner area.

Meanwhile, the front wall of the Mapolda became the target of graffiti by the crowd, with critical and protesting messages.

Based on observations at the scene, the crowd continues to arrive. The protest has led to the closure of the Ring Road from west to east for vehicle traffic.
