Protesters disperse from outside DPR/MPR building after police intervention

A number of protesters began dispersing from outside the DPR/MPR building after police forcibly cleared the area.

Based on ANTARA’s observations, police began spraying water from inside the DPR/MPR complex at around 6.58 p.m. local time.

A number of protesters were immediately seen leaving the front of the DPR building at a run. Police were also seen urging the public to return to their respective homes.

Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Police Commissioner Budi Hermanto, expressed appreciation to all parties who had jointly maintained a safe and conducive situation during the activity.

“We appreciate the public who have conveyed their aspirations in an orderly and peaceful manner. After AMPB representatives were received by the DPR leadership, the crowd gradually left the location in an orderly fashion,” said Police Commissioner Budi Hermanto.

“Differences of opinion are part of democracy. The most important thing is that every aspiration can be conveyed in a good manner, without provocation, without violence, and while respecting the rights of other members of the public,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the area outside the DPR building, traffic flow management was carried out situationally, adjusting to conditions and developments on the ground. Police also continued to provide services and security for various public activities taking place simultaneously.

Commissioner Budi urged the public to remain calm and not be easily influenced by information whose veracity could not be confirmed. The public was also expected to jointly maintain a conducive situation and avoid actions that could potentially cause misunderstandings or friction.

“Jakarta is a shared space. Let us safeguard it with maturity, care, and a spirit of unity, so that every citizen can express their opinions while carrying out daily activities safely and comfortably,” he said.

The situation of the expression of aspirations in Jakarta on Thursday was generally conducive, in line with the importance of maintaining an open, orderly democratic space that respects the interests of the entire community.
