Protesters Conduct Absentee Prayers Before DIY Regional Police Headquarters
Protesters Hold Absentee Prayers in Front of the DIY Regional Police Headquarters
A group of protesters held absentee prayers on Ring Road in front of the DIY Regional Police Headquarters, Sleman, DIY, on Monday evening (24 March). The absentee prayers were held after hundreds of protesters had earlier besieged and torn down the eastern gate of the DIY Regional Police Headquarters at around 6 pm. Some of the protesters performed the absentee prayers in several groups starting at around 7.15 pm. The absentee prayers were followed by the evening prayers. Yazi, one of the participants, said that the absentee prayers were intended to pray for the victims of violence by the authorities, especially the police, including those who were repressed or arrested without any clarification. “And also many of our friends were involved in the August demonstration last year, including friends from UNY (Perdana Arie) who were recently released (from detention) yesterday,” said Yazi. “This is a form of prayer for them, so that they (those who died) may rest in peace, and so that the police can realise that what they are doing is wrong,” he added. Yazi emphasised that this demonstration was a collective movement, not representing any particular party, except for the people who are fed up with the behaviour of the authorities. In addition, Yazi added that he hoped that through this demonstration and prayers, the reforms within the police force could be effective and that the police could return to being protectors of the people. Shortly afterwards, other protesters in front of the DIY Regional Police Headquarters ran away from the location. Then, the sound of explosions similar to firecrackers was heard, the source of which was unknown. Then, another group of protesters appeared from the north of the DIY Regional Police Headquarters. Clashes broke out, and the protesters then moved back and forth, running towards the west and east. About 15 minutes later, another group of protesters appeared from the south, forcing the protesters to disperse. Based on observations, the demonstration in front of the DIY Regional Police Headquarters completely dispersed at around 8.20 pm. Traffic on Ring Road resumed for motor vehicles.
