Protest against ABRI captain

UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Hundreds of students set up roadblocks, bringing traffic to a complete standstill in some thoroughfares, in their demonstration Saturday against a military officer who hit their teacher.

Students of Indonesian Moslem University and University '45 set fire to tires and unfurled banners that read: "We reject violence" and "Drag the military hoodlum to court."

The students accused the officer, a captain, of hitting H.M. Zein Irwanto in the eye, forcing him to be hospitalized.

On Aug. 10 Irwanto was reportedly trying to help a man and a child who fell after the motorbike they were riding collided with the captain's speeding car. The captain also tried to help but an argument broke out and the captain reportedly hit the lecturer in the eye.

Indonesian Moslem University Rector H.M. Mochtar reported the case to the commander of the Wirabuana Regional Military Command. Irwanto said he had forgiven the officer. (31)
