Protection of migrant workers

A number of non-governmental organizations and many
individuals under the coordination of the Women Solidarity
Association have sent a letter to Dato Ajit Singh, the Secretary
General of ASEAN in Jakarta. The letter expresses deep concern
over Flor Contemplacion's case, and proposes a way out.

The letter also stresses the importance of including the
problem of migrant workers in the working agenda of ASEAN,
because in Southeast Asia there are countries that supply migrant
workers and countries that receive them. The migrant workers will
keep increasing in the years to come. The Flor case shows how
delicate the issue of migrant workers is. So, there must be a
systematic way in handling the problem.

We suggest that Dato Ajit Singh, in his capacity as ASEAN's
Secretary General, appeals to the ASEAN nations to sign and
ratify the United Nations' Convention concerning protection of
migrant workers and their families, for the sake of their welfare
and safety.
