Protecting the Environment, Pertamina IT Surabaya Relies on This Programme!

PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Integrated Terminal Surabaya (IT Surabaya) consistently prioritises sustainability aspects in its operational areas. This is demonstrated through the Lentera Pagesangan (Protected Environment, Prosperous Community) programme in Pagesangan Ward, Jambangan Subdistrict, Surabaya.

Area Manager for Communications Relations and CSR at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Jatimbalinus, Ahad Rahedi, explained that the main driving factor for the company in establishing this social innovation programme is its commitment to sustainably fulfilling environmental and social responsibilities, not merely based on compliance but also providing benefits to the community.

“The company recognises that its operations at Pertamina Patra Niaga Integrated Terminal Surabaya must be accompanied by tangible contributions to improving environmental quality and the welfare of surrounding communities,” stated management when contacted by CNBC Indonesia, as written on Monday (30/4/2026).

The Lentera Pagesangan programme was prompted by local residents’ habits of disposing of household waste into rivers and the lack of domestic waste control, leading to environmental pollution. Additionally, the low economic conditions of the community and high unemployment rates, which trigger various social problems such as domestic violence, child neglect, and community conflicts, provide strong reasons for the company to empower and support the community.

To this end, Lentera Pagesangan transforms domestic waste from a source of problems into a valuable resource through a community-based circular economy system, integrating water hyacinth, wastewater treatment, fish farming, and waste management.

In practice, Lentera Pagesangan involves five categories of vulnerable groups, including 23 elderly individuals with social access vulnerabilities, 179 women with social access vulnerabilities, five poor residents with economic asset vulnerabilities, 30 children with social vulnerabilities, and 23 riverside residents with geographic access vulnerabilities.

From an environmental perspective, the Lentera Pagesangan programme has successfully reduced Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) by 16,728 milligrams per litre (mg/L) per year, saved 345.21 cubic metres (m3) of water per year, managed 85 tonnes of waste per year, and utilised 83 kilograms (kg) of organic waste.

On the other hand, the programme also saves costs on water pollution reduction by Rp 911,418 per year and boosts average monthly income for direct beneficiaries by Rp 210,000 per person.

From a social standpoint, Lentera Pagesangan has engaged 267 direct beneficiaries, 572 indirect beneficiaries, and 302 vulnerable groups directly or indirectly.

The Lentera Pagesangan programme operates through partnerships with the Environmental Agency (DLH), Food Security and Agriculture Agency (DKPP), and the Environmental Life Consortium NGO. It also serves as a learning platform for the general public and promotes community capacity building through training sessions.

Furthermore, Pertamina Patra Niaga IT Surabaya has other flagship programmes, such as the SIMULTAN (Simultaneous Multi-Line Tank Operation) Innovation Programme, which achieves energy efficiency of 289.2 gigajoules (GJ). Additionally, there is the OPTIMIST (Optimal Mist System) Programme, which Reduces Water Usage through the Implementation of High-Pressure Mist Technology in Tank Temperature Control Systems, saving 702 m3 of water.

Moreover, Pertamina Patra Niaga IT Surabaya has reduced emissions through the CARGO (Carbon Reduction through Gas Optimization) Programme, Reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions through Optimisation of the Out Pipeline Route at IT Surabaya, which lowers emissions by 86.13 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq).

Thanks to these programmes, Pertamina Patra Niaga IT Surabaya received the PROPER Gold award in 2025 from the Ministry of Environment (KLH). This achievement stems from the company’s active environmental management efforts in both operational aspects and for the surrounding community environment.

The award was presented directly by the Minister of Environment (BPLH)/Head of the Environmental Management Agency (BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, to the company’s representative at the PROPER Environmental Award event at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/4/2026). It should be noted that the Company Performance Rating Programme (PROPER) award is held annually to enhance corporate compliance with environmental regulations.

This award is also inseparable from the Beyond Compliance approach implemented by Pertamina Patra Niaga IT Surabaya. In this regard, the company ensures that all operational aspects meet and even exceed applicable environmental regulations, including air pollution control, water pollution control, management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, waste management, energy efficiency, emission control, environmental management systems, life cycle assessments, and resource conservation.

“The CSR programmes are developed not only as social activities but as innovations capable of solving environmental problems while enhancing community economic independence. One implementation of social innovation is the Lentera Pagesangan programme, which responds to environmental issues in Pagesangan Ward, Jambangan Subdistrict,” he explained.
