Protecting Halmahera's Endemic Flora and Fauna, This Industrial Estate Builds a Sanctuary
PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) has inaugurated Sanctuary Park, an 11-hectare conservation area within the Weda Bay Project in Central Halmahera, North Maluku. The launch, coinciding with the 2026 World Environment Day commemoration, represents the company’s commitment to supporting biodiversity preservation and sustainable environmental management within its operational area. The Sanctuary Park was developed as a conservation area to support the protection of flora and fauna in the forest release zone, in accordance with applicable permits and regulations.
President Director of PT IWIP, Kevin He, stated that regulatory compliance is the primary foundation for the company’s operations. “All industrial activities are carried out in accordance with applicable regulations and are able to meet global expectations for responsible business practices. Therefore, environmental protection and biodiversity are inseparable parts of the management of the Weda Bay industrial estate,” he said in an official statement on Friday (2/6).
The Sanctuary Park contains several conservation zones, including areas for endemic plants, breeding grounds for various bird species, butterflies, reptiles including snakes and crocodiles, and habitats for other local wildlife. Species that can be found in the area include the Ternate Kasturi, Red-cheeked Parrot, Soa-soa Layar, and Halmahera Crow. In addition to fauna, the park is also a conservation site for various endemic flora of North Maluku, such as Ardisia ternatensis, Microcos ceramensis, Piper caducibracteum, Jasminum zippelianum, and various types of orchids and ornamental plants like Bulbophyllum sp., Malaxis sp., and Plocoglottis sp.
General Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) PT IWIP, Iwan Kurniawan, said that the World Environment Day commemoration serves as a momentum to strengthen environmental protection and biodiversity conservation efforts. “Environmental management is not only carried out through monitoring and regulatory compliance, but also through real efforts to maintain ecosystems and biodiversity. The presence of Sanctuary Park is part of these efforts, as well as an educational tool to increase understanding of the importance of protecting Halmahera’s endemic flora and fauna,” he said. In managing and supervising Sanctuary Park, IWIP collaborates with the North Maluku Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to ensure the application of conservation principles in accordance with regulations and standards for wildlife and plant protection.
