Prosecutor's Office Strengthens Law Enforcement in Papua, Focusing on High-Value Cases
JAKARTA - The Head of the Public Relations and Legal Information Centre (Kapuspenkum) of the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Supriatna, revealed the Attorney General’s directives on strengthening law enforcement in the Papua region, both in handling general criminal offences and special criminal offences that have drawn public attention.
“All work unit leaders are urged to carry out their duties with full responsibility to deliver true justice to the people of Papua,” said Anang in his statement on Wednesday (1/4/2026).
The Attorney General encourages the application of restorative justice that aligns with the local wisdom of Papuan society, which prioritises customary peace.
Nevertheless, the resolution of cases must still be conducted professionally, accountably, and without diminishing legal certainty.
The Attorney General also emphasised the importance of professionalism in handling cases that attract public attention.
This includes the case of the shooting of a Smart Air aircraft by an armed criminal group in the Merauke area, which is deemed to require serious and measured handling.
In the field of special criminal offences, the Attorney General appreciates the work units that are actively conducting investigations into corruption cases.
However, he also reprimanded units that are still considered passive in uncovering corruption cases in the region.
Several major cases are currently being handled, including allegations of corruption in PON XX Papua funds and the construction of aerosport facilities in Mimika.
In addition, the Attorney General emphasised the importance of optimising state loss recovery, given that there is still a backlog of substitute payments amounting to Rp97.14 billion in the Papua region.
In the civil and state administrative fields, the Attorney General requests the strengthening of the role of State Prosecutors in assisting local governments to accelerate budget absorption without deviating from legal provisions.
Meanwhile, in the supervision field, the Attorney General stressed the importance of transparency through LHKPN reporting and the objective implementation of the Government Agency Performance Accountability System (SAKIP).
In asset recovery efforts, the Indonesian Prosecutor’s Office Asset Recovery Agency recorded success in returning value amounting to Rp15.5 billion up to March 2026.
“The Attorney General reminds all ranks to be wary of counter-attacks from corruptors (corruptors fight back) by maintaining integrity and publicising performance transparently,” said Anang.
These directives affirm the Prosecutor’s Office’s commitment to strengthening law enforcement in Papua through a restorative justice approach alongside firm action against high-value corruption cases.
