Prosecutors Justify Detention of Ex-Sleman Regent's Son Despite Protests Over His Health

Sleman District Attorney’s Office has responded to protests from the legal team of Raudi Akmal, a member of the Sleman Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) from the National Mandate Party (PAN) faction, who was named a suspect and detained in a corruption case involving tourism grants for the 2020 fiscal year. Raudi is the son of former Sleman Regent Sri Purnomo. His lawyers argued that he was ill and should not have been immediately detained. Sleman Chief Prosecutor Bambang Yunianto addressed the accusations, stating that the investigation involved examinations by two different doctors. “In principle, we conducted the examination objectively and gave authority to the doctors, who stated that he was fit to be detained,” Bambang said on Monday (22/6/2026). He added that investigators observed Raudi was in good health, a finding corroborated by the medical assessment. During the process, Raudi was seen walking upright without assistance as he was escorted to the detention vehicle. “We saw his condition was fine, and this was confirmed by the doctor. There was no permanent obstacle preventing his detention, so we proceeded,” he explained. Raudi’s lawyer, Soepriyadi, maintained that his client was unwell and should not have been detained. He revealed that during the initial examination, Raudi’s blood pressure was recorded at 150. “We informed them that after being named a suspect, he was to be detained. But the first examination by a doctor from Sleman Regional Hospital declared him sick and unfit for any coercive measures,” Soepriyadi stated at the Sleman District Attorney’s Office. He noted that Raudi was still in recovery, having been discharged from hospital only three or four days prior. “Even his walking was unsteady,” he said. Soepriyadi continued that after the hospital examination, the prosecution ordered a second check at the internal clinic of the Sleman District Attorney’s Office. The result declared Raudi healthy, despite his blood pressure again reading 150. “After being declared sick by the hospital doctor, he was suddenly ordered to be examined at the prosecution’s clinic, and the result said he was healthy. How can a blood pressure of 150 be considered healthy? What is going on here? Are they forcing this detention?” he questioned. He accused the prosecution of violating his client’s human rights by forcing the detention of a sick person. “We see the Sleman District Attorney’s Office as disregarding our client’s human rights. How can a sick person be forced into detention based on a clinic doctor’s claim that he is healthy? That is not right. That is my criticism,” he asserted. The legal team is currently preparing further legal steps regarding the detention. “We may file a pre-trial motion or other measures, but we will discuss this as a team first,” he stressed. Raudi Akmal was previously reported to have been named a suspect and detained at the Class II A Detention Centre in Yogyakarta, also known as Wirogunan Prison, on Monday evening. The announcement was made directly by Chief Prosecutor Bambang Yunianto. Raudi was named a suspect after failing to attend two prior summonses by investigators. He only appeared on the third summons, whereupon he was immediately named a suspect. “Today, Monday, 22 June 2026, investigators from the Sleman District Attorney’s Office have elevated the status of a witness and named him a suspect in the development of a case concerning alleged corruption and irregularities in the management of tourism grant funds in Sleman Regency for the 2020 fiscal year,” Bambang told reporters.
