Prosecutors believe Syahril guilty
JAKARTA: The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is planning to
challenge the High Court's verdict acquitting Bank Indonesia
Governor Syahril Sabirin from all charges in the Bak Bali case,
saying it believed the official guilty.
"We believe Syahril abused his power in the Bank Bali case
and therefore we plan to appeal the verdict," spokesman for the
Attorney General's Office Barman Zahir said on Monday.
He said the office obtained a copy of the High Court's verdict
last Friday and would have until Sept. 13 to file its appeal with
the Supreme Court.
Barman said the High Court had failed to do its job properly.
He said the central bank was not a cashier and therefore it
should have not paid Bank Bali's claims to Bank Dagang Nasional
Indoneisa.
"We are disappointed by the High Court's decision," he said.
A district court had previously declared Syahril Sabirin
guilty and sentenced him to three years in jail. But Syahril did
not serve the jail term until the High Court won his appeal. --
