Prosecutors appointed for Bali trial

JAKARTA: The Attorney General's Office appointed on Wednesday five prosecutors for the trial of a key suspect in the Bali bombing.

A spokesman said the team would prosecute Amrozi -- the first suspect to be detained over the bombing which killed 202 people on Oct. 12 last year.

"All five are Bali-based prosecutors and they will also be assisted by junior prosecutors who will be named later," spokesman Antasari Azhar said.

The team consists of three native Balinese prosecutors and two non-Balinese prosecutors, one of them a woman.

Amrozi is expected to be the first suspect to go on trial on the resort island, probably in late April.

He is accused of buying chemicals for the massive vehicle bomb which exploded outside the Sari Club, causing most of the deaths, and of buying the van itself. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

Some 29 other Indonesian suspects are also in custody awaiting trial. Seven more Indonesians and two Malaysians are still being pursued. --AFP
