Prosecutors Appeal Nadiem Makarim's 10-Year Sentence in Chromebook Corruption Case
The Attorney General’s Office has officially filed an appeal against the verdict for defendant Nadiem Makarim in the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebooks. Prosecutors believe the judges’ decision did not fully accommodate their demands. “The prosecution team has received the copy of the verdict from the Corruption Court, and today, the team has declared an appeal against the case,” said Head of the Attorney General’s Office for Legal Information, Anang Supriatna, at the Attorney General’s Office complex in South Jakarta on Thursday (2/6/2026). Anang stated that while they are appealing, they still respect the panel of judges. “We still appreciate and respect the court’s decision, but today the prosecution team has filed an appeal,” Anang said. The specific points of objection will be detailed in the appeal memorandum currently being prepared by the prosecution team. When asked about investigating money laundering, Anang mentioned the possibility of expanding the case to include money laundering charges and implicating corporations, based on the judges’ considerations during the trial. Regarding Nadiem Makarim’s detention status after the verdict, Anang explained that the former minister remains under house arrest, and this status will not change during the appeal process. Previously, Nadiem appealed his 10-year prison sentence, arguing the panel of judges ignored legal facts presented during the trial. “I will continue to fight. For my children, for my family, for the entire nation of Indonesia that I still love. I will fight. I will immediately file an appeal to move forward, for the truth, for the young people, for the professionals out there, for all honest people who are criminalised. I will not stop,” Nadiem said after the verdict hearing at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (30/6/2026). Nadiem claimed that none of the judges dared to look him directly in the eye and maintained his innocence. He was found guilty of corruption committed jointly and sentenced to 10 years in prison, a fine of Rp 1 billion, and ordered to pay Rp 809 billion in restitution, with an additional five-year sentence if the restitution is not paid.
