Prosecutors Appeal 10-Year Sentence for Nadiem Makarim

The Attorney General’s Office has confirmed it is appealing the corruption verdict against defendant Nadiem Makarim. Head of the Attorney General’s Office for Legal Information, Anang Supriatna, stated that the legal challenge was lodged in response to an appeal also filed by Makarim as the defendant. “Regarding the verdict in the Nadiem Makarim case, the Public Prosecutor’s Team has received a copy of the decision. And the public prosecutor has declared an appeal against the case,” Anang said at the Attorney General’s Office in Jakarta on Friday (3/7/2026). Anang stated that the appeal was filed while still respecting the verdict handed down on Tuesday (30/6/2026). The Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (30/6/2026) found Nadiem Makarim guilty in a corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops. Makarim is the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2019-2024 period. In its decision, the panel of judges sentenced Makarim to 10 years in prison. The panel also imposed an additional penalty of compensation for state losses amounting to Rp 809 billion or a further 5 years in prison. The verdict was not unanimous, as one judge issued a dissenting opinion, stating that Nadiem was not guilty and should be acquitted. Following the verdict, Makarim and his legal team declared an appeal, insisting on his innocence in the Chromebook corruption case. Kapuspenkum Anang continued that the public prosecutor’s team filed the appeal considering their original demand for an 18-year prison sentence. The appeal by the prosecutors is also intended to anticipate further legal challenges if the high court annuls the first-instance court’s decision. Anang said the prosecutor’s appeal memorandum was already submitted to the Jakarta High Court on Thursday (2/7/2026).
