Prosecutor wants one year for obstetrician

JAKARTA: The prosecution asked the court on Wednesday for a one-year jail sentence and two years' probation for an obstetrician at Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta for alleged negligence in the treatment of Debora Lydya L. Tobing.

Prosecutor Suntoro said Azen Salim was negligent in his treatment of Debora during and after her delivery on Oct. 25, 2003.

Azen left the hospital two hours after the delivery while Debora was suffering from hemorrhaging and cramping, the prosecutor told the South Jakarta District Court.

The prosecutor said Azen's treatment of the woman only made the bleeding worse.

Debora sought treatment at Bintaro International Hospital, where doctors found decaying placenta and infected womb tissue inside her. The woman eventually made a full recovery.

Presiding judge I Wayan Rena adjourned the trial until next week at which time the court will hear from the defense. -- JP
