Prosecutor seeks severe punishment for students

JAKARTA (JP): The public prosecutor urged the South Jakarta
District Court yesterday to sentence six students to nine years
imprisonment each for assaulting another student, causing his
death.

The six students are identified as Abdur Rohman, Nandan
Mulyadi alias Penjor, Jodhy Kresnapati, Muhammad Faad, Hendi
Hendarsyah and Heriansyah alias Yayang.

All of the defendants are between 16 and 18 years old, as was
their victim, Syaefudin.

The defendants are students at a state-owned high school in
Cilandak, South Jakarta. The victim was a student at a technical
high school in the same area.

Prosecutor Agus Sutoto said that testimonies by witnesses and
material evidence available proved beyond any doubt that the
defendants attacked Syaefudin in a brawl between the defendants'
clique and the victim's clique. The brawl took place on Sept. 9
of last year on Jl. Gaharu, Cilandak.

Postmortem examination from the Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital
found that Syaefudin died of cerebral hemorrhage, the prosecutor
added.

"The defendants violated article 170 and 55 of the Criminal
Code," the prosecutor told the court.

If found guilty they could face 12 years in jail each.

At 9:30 p.m on Sept.9 last year Syaefudin and his friends,
including Wahyu Hidayat, Arta Pratama and Fajri Fatara came to
Jl. Gaharu where the defendants were sitting around.

Syaefuddin and his friends came to the scene to ask the
defendants to return Wahyu's bag and hat which had been stolen by
the defendants' clique a few days earlier.

The defendants' group refused to give back the bag and hat.
Instead they attacked Syaefudin and company.

Syaefudin and his friends ran away, but the defendants caught
Syaefuddin and punched his head repeatedly.

Prosecutor Agus pointed out that the defendants deserved stern
penalties given the fact that the assault cost Syaefudin his
life.

He added that stern sentences handed down to students involved
in a brawl might deter other students from doing the same.

Police data show more than 150 crimes, including brawls and
holdups, were committed by students in the capital last year.
