Jakarta (ANTARA) - The trial for the reading of the demands in the alleged Chromebook corruption case, which implicates Nadiem Anwar Makarim as the defendant, will be held at the Corruption Crimes Court at the Central Jakarta District Court on Wednesday (13/5).

Chief Judge Purwanto Abdullah stated that the evidentiary hearing for the case has concluded, allowing the public prosecutor the opportunity to present the demands.

“At the request of the public prosecutor, we request the opportunity to read the demands on Wednesday, 13 May 2026,” said the Chief Judge during the closing of the defendant examination hearing at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court on Monday (11/5) evening.

Ahead of the demands hearing, the Panel of Judges has approved the request to change the detention status of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2019–2024 period from detention in a correctional facility to house arrest, effective from Tuesday (12/5).

Although his detention status has changed, several conditions have been imposed on Nadiem, with emphasis that if he violates them, his status will revert to state detention (rutan).

The Chief Judge emphasised that no other factors influenced the change in Nadiem’s detention status besides his health condition.

The corruption is alleged to have occurred, among other things, through the implementation of the procurement of information and communication technology-based learning facilities in the form of Chromebook laptops and CDM for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years, which did not align with the procurement planning and principles.

Nadiem’s actions are charged as being committed jointly with three other defendants in separate trials, namely Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, and Sri Wahyuningsih, as well as Jurist Tan, who remains at large.

In detail, the state losses caused amount to Rp1.56 trillion related to the education digitalisation programme at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, as well as US$44.05 million or equivalent to Rp621.39 billion due to the procurement of unnecessary and unbeneficial CDM for the education digitalisation programme.

Through these actions, Nadiem is alleged to have received Rp809.59 billion originating from PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB) via PT Gojek Indonesia.

It is noted that the majority of PT AKAB’s funds come from Google’s investment of US$786.99 million.

This can be seen from Nadiem’s wealth recorded in the State Organiser’s Wealth Report (LHKPN) for 2022, which includes the acquisition of securities worth Rp5.59 trillion.

For his actions, the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology faces penalties as stipulated in Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Corruption Crimes as amended and supplemented by Law Number 20 of 2001 jo. Article 55 paragraph (1) first of the Criminal Code.
