Proposal to Limit Police Chief's Term Deemed Biased by DPR Member: Do Not Interfere with President's Authority

JAKARTA - A member of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), Soedeson Tandra, assessed the recommendation from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission (KPRP) regarding the limitation of the term of office of the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) as a tendentious proposal. “In my view, that recommendation, if I may quote, is tendentious. Yes, do not interfere with the President’s authority,” Soedeson told Kompas.com on Wednesday (6/5/2026). The President has the right to choose someone he believes is capable of holding that position. “That is the President’s prerogative. How can we limit it? Like that. The end-user is the President. He knows who he will appoint, who that person is,” he said. “So, in my opinion, do not limit the President’s authority to determine who the Kapolri is, the term of office is in the hands of the President,” he stated. Member of the KPRP and Special Advisor to the President on Security, Public Order, and Police Reform, General (Ret.) Ahmad Dofiri, revealed that the KPRP also proposed guidelines related to police career progression. “That will be regulated regarding this career path or career progression. Entry, there is (recommendation to limit the Kapolri’s term),” Dofiri said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
