Proposal to Cut Ministers' Salaries for Efficiency, Cabinet Secretary Teddy: It Will Be Discussed!
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya has commented on the proposal to cut salaries of officials at the ministerial level to save on the budget. This idea has emerged to prepare for the long-term impacts of global uncertainties stemming from the war in the Middle East.
“Who was it that mentioned it yesterday?” said Teddy, at the Presidential Palace Complex, Tuesday (7/6/2026).
However, when asked if discussions have already taken place in the government, he said that this matter will be deliberated in meetings in the next few days. He also emphasised that the government has not yet made any decisions regarding the plan.
“Ask the one who mentioned it yesterday. So, the point is that these concepts will be discussed in meetings in the next few days, we’ll see, there are no decisions at all yet,” said Teddy.
Previously, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed that there have already been discussions at the government level regarding the salary cuts. However, according to him, the final decision will be in the hands of the president.
“I don’t know, the president has to explain it. Otherwise, my life will be difficult. There have been talks like that, but the final decision is not clear yet,” explained Purbaya, at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Office, yesterday.
He even mentioned the potential scale of the budget cut, namely 25%. Although he has not confirmed that this is a decided figure.
“It seems like 25%,” he said.
“Not yet, guessing, they told me to guess. I guess around 25%,” he added.
Furthermore, Purbaya also stated that he does not object if his salary is indeed cut.
