Jakarta – Secretary General of the Indonesian Lawyers’ Professional Association (Propindo), Heikal Safar, expressed deep concern over the revelation of a group chat involving 16 students from the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Law (FHUI) who are suspected of engaging in harassment against female students and lecturers. Heikal condemned the students and urged the university to impose strict sanctions. According to him, the sexual harassment case came to light after screenshots of conversations in a group, allegedly containing content that harasses and objectifies women, circulated and went viral on social media, sparking widespread public outrage across Indonesia. “This deplorable act of harassment and violence against female students and lecturers is in direct violation of criminal law, religious norms, and academic ethics,” Heikal stated to several journalists in Jakarta on Wednesday (15/4/2026). Heikal even urged law enforcement authorities to take immediate and firm action against the 16 FHUI students if they are proven guilty of the indecent acts. Moreover, he received information that the victims of the 2029 group exceed 20 people, comprising 15 female students and seven female lecturers. “Therefore, the impact of this deplorable sexual harassment case against female students and lecturers, besides involving the university and law enforcement, also requires the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Indonesia to intervene and conduct a full investigation transparently, free from any interference,” Heikal said.
