Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg, Russia. Putin told him that he hopes the Iranian people will be able to overcome what he described as “difficult times”. Putin also hopes that peace will soon be realised.

Russia has offered to act as a mediator to help restore calm in the Middle East following attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran. Russia has strongly condemned those US-Israeli attacks.

Russia has also repeatedly offered to store Iran’s enriched uranium as a way to ease tensions. However, this offer has not yet been accepted by the United States.

“From our side, we will do everything that serves your interests and the interests of all the people in this region to ensure that peace is realised as soon as possible,” Putin said to Araghchi during the meeting on Monday (27/4) local time, according to Russian state media RIA, as reported by Reuters news agency and Al Arabiya English on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

“Last week I received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader. I would like you to convey my most sincere thanks for this and to reaffirm that Russia, like Iran, intends to continue our strategic relations,” Putin added.

Last year, Iran signed a 20-year strategic partnership agreement with Moscow. Russia is building two new nuclear units at Bushehr, Iran’s only nuclear power plant site, and Iran supplies Russia with Shahed drones for use against Ukraine.

RIA reported that Araghchi said relations between Russia and Iran will continue to strengthen. He also thanked Putin for Moscow’s support.
