A fire struck a project logistics barracks on Jalan Pantai Indah Utara 3, Penjaringan District, North Jakarta, on Saturday, 29 August 2026. The fire, suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, caused estimated losses of Rp200 million.

The North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) said the flames engulfed a project barracks located within a development area. The structure was made from used shipping containers and covered approximately 75 square metres.

Gatot Sulaeman, Head of Operations at North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Gulkarmat, said the fire was believed to have originated from an electrical short circuit that ignited the blaze.

“This fire is suspected to have occurred due to an electrical short circuit that triggered ignition and caused the fire,” Gatot said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday.

According to witness accounts, the fire broke out while several workers were resting in the project area. The project office, which used repurposed shipping containers, suddenly caught fire. The flames then spread to a container used as a logistics warehouse.

The container stored various electrical equipment, requiring the fire to be tackled promptly to prevent it from spreading to other areas.

The situation at the site also drew attention because the fire was located close to PIK (Pantai Indah Kapuk) Hospital.

“The situation became more panicked because the location was adjacent to PIK Hospital, so hospital staff also helped firefighters extinguish the flames,” Gatot said.

Gatot said the presence of the hospital near the site also made the handling process a focus for officers. PIK Hospital was affected by the fire that occurred around the hospital fence. That area became one of the access points used by firefighters to carry out their response.

Nevertheless, the main object that burned was the project logistics barracks located within the development area. The barracks measured approximately 75 square metres and was constructed from used shipping containers. In addition to the building, the fire also affected the logistics warehouse container storing a number of electrical equipment items.

To handle the fire, North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Gulkarmat deployed 42 personnel and seven fire engines.
