Progress on Java-Sumatra Gas Pipeline Connection
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is accelerating the development of natural gas transmission pipeline infrastructure to connect energy networks from the island of Java to Aceh. The Dumai - Sei Mangkei (Dusem) gas transmission pipeline project is intended to enhance natural gas distribution infrastructure across various sectors.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, explained that the government is currently focusing on completing the construction of the Dumai-Sei Mangkei pipeline segment as a primary connecting route. He emphasised that the unification of these transmission lines is crucial to ensuring energy availability for industries amidst Indonesia’s current gas surplus.
“It is being built now. Part of it is already finished, and the rest will be completed by 2027. We are also currently constructing the Dumai-Sei Mangkei section. That is why we are building the pipeline between Dumai-Sei Mangkei, connecting Sumatra to Java. Java and Sumatra,” he stated after a press conference at the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, on Monday (29/06/2026).
The government is also increasing the capacity of existing pipeline routes. This step is being taken so that the volume of inter-island gas distribution can be managed when one region experiences excess production.
“It was already there, but we are increasing the size. The purpose is so that if there is a gas surplus in Sumatra, we can divert it to Java. If there is a surplus in East Java, we can divert it to West Java. Something like that,” he said.
The integration of this gas pipeline infrastructure is projected to be fully completed by 2027. With the connection of the route from Sumatra to Java, the government hopes to overcome industrial gas distribution constraints to support sustainable national economic growth.
“The connectivity of the gas pipeline from East Java to West Java is also being constructed now,” he added.
As part of this project, the first stage of the Cirebon-Semarang pipeline (Cisem-1) was completed in 2023 and is currently supplying gas to the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate in Central Java. Subsequently, the Cisem-2 pipeline also recently commenced operations and will supply gas from East Java to West Java.
Upon the completion of these pipeline developments, including the Dumai-Sei Mangkei (Dusem) pipeline, the network will eventually distribute potential gas supplies from the Andaman Block, which possesses significant reserves, through the transmission pipeline.
According to records, the total budget for the construction of the Dumai-Sei Mangkei gas pipeline is IDR 6.6 trillion, and it will distribute potential natural gas from the Agung and Andaman Working Areas in Aceh for use in Java and Sumatra.
