Progress on Bundaran HI Underpass Connecting to MRT Station
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is continuing to complete the construction of an underground pedestrian tunnel, known as an extended concourse, in the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia area of Central Jakarta. The project is targeted for completion before Jakarta’s 500th anniversary next year.
President Director of PT MRT Jakarta, Tuhiyat, stated that the construction progress of the underground tunnel has currently reached approximately 22 percent. He is targeting the completion of the tunnel, which will connect several hotels to the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta MRT Station, for June 2027.
‘Regarding the construction of the underground pedestrian walkway, the extended concourse, the current progress is approximately 22 percent and we have a target for completion in June 2027, exactly five centuries of Jakarta,’ Tuhiyat said at the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta MRT Station, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (29/7/2026).
That afternoon, Republika had the opportunity to inspect the underground tunnel project directly. Based on Republika’s observation, a number of workers were continuing their work at a depth of about 10 metres below the ground surface. The space has an area of approximately 4,200 square metres with a floor-to-ceiling height of about 3.5 metres. The dedicated underground pedestrian tunnel will later connect the Bundaran HI MRT Station with the Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD in the Wisma Nusantara complex and the Grand Hyatt Jakarta in the Plaza Indonesia complex.
President Director of PT Integrasi Transit Jakarta, Yulham Ferdiansyah Roestam, explained that the construction of the extended concourse is being carried out to expand the service area of the Bundaran HI MRT Station. This is because Bundaran HI is predicted to become one of the busiest MRT stations once the route to Monas is operational.
‘As media colleagues may already know, phase 1 will be continued to phase 2 and in the not-too-distant future will continue to Monas. And this station will become one of the busiest stations, so the concourse area is expected to accommodate more visitors coming to this area,’ Yulham explained.
He explained that the extended concourse is located beneath Jalan MH Thamrin, precisely under the Bundaran HI Astra Transjakarta Bus Stop. The western side of the area will be connected to Plaza Indonesia or the Grand Hyatt, while the eastern side will be connected to the Wisma Nusantara complex and the Pullman Hotel.
